Peer Tutor- The Learning Center

Peer Tutors are students who possess experience and knowledge in an academic subject area and are able to use that experience and knowledge to guide other students. Peer tutoring provides a comfortable and supportive atmosphere for students to practice their skills and master their course material by working with their classmates and peers.  Peer tutors may work up to 20 hours per week and a minimum of 2 hours per week.




Peer Tutor Responsibilities

  • Help students learn and understand course material  
  • Clarify subject concepts  
  • Further explain course content through examples 
  • Guide students through problems and questions  
  • Assist students in preparing for exams  
  • Model appropriate learning strategies and study skills  
  • Work with students individually and in groups 
  • Refer students to other resources as necessary  
  • Maintain and file contact logs of tutoring sessions  
  • Distribute student feedback surveys  

QUALIFICATIONS 
  • Recommendation of department chair and/or instructor of course for which tutoring will be done  
  • Interview with the Assistant Director of The Learning Center 
  • Maintain an overall GPA of 2.7 
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.00 in subject area (Math, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Biology, Bimolecular Science, Geological Sciences)

  • Demonstrated overall academic ability 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Listening – able to understand and interpret tutees’ questions 
  • Verbal – able to explain concepts clearly  
  • Ability to work well with peers 
  • Ability to work well with faculty 
  • Ability to be prompt in meeting tutoring schedule and in filing reports 
  • Ability to work with and lead a group 
  • Ability to serve as a role model for students seeking assistance 

RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Complete peer tutor training as required by the Tutor Coordinator in your first semester as a tutor  
  • Training sessions are held on (4) Friday afternoons: Dates: TBD 
  • There is a mandatory 099/102 content workshop: Dates: TBD 
  • Maintain and file contact logs of tutoring sessions both accurately and in a timely fashion 
  • Be punctual and reliable 
  • Be available for at least two consistent hours per week throughout the semester – commit to the entire semester 
  • Report any problems or concerns to the Tutor Coordinator.
